Mauj is a Syrian non-profit organisation that started its activities in 2014 under the name of “Radio Souriat*” and adopted by resolution NO.9 on 29 June 2020. Mauj is community-based and is led by women and governed by feminist principles. The board consists of 5 women, while the executive teams consist of 14 people (10 women – 4 men) spread across Syria’s different regions. Radio Souriat* was the first feminist internet radio in Syria, dealing with social problems from a feminist viewpoint and working to uphold, protect women’s rights. The role of Radio Souriat has grown to carry out community-based projects on the ground. As such Radio Souriat now operates under Mauj, a newly licensed local organization, and the radio is one of its key programmes. Mauj is working in a participatory manner to address community development using both approaches of community-based work and production and dissemination of media content. Mauj has a community center that is a secure civic shared space for women and youth. A substantial part of this center’s work is holding social and cultural events tackling issues faced by women and girls’ and advocating and raising awareness on their rights with the aim to establish a women empowering movement in Syria. |
